課程概述

Clouds and precipitation play a crucial role in Earth’s weather and climate. They are generated by atmospheric motions that occur across a broad range of scales, and they, in turn, feedback to these motions by affecting the energy balance that drives atmospheric circulation. Satellites offer an excellent platform for observing and studying cloud and precipitation processes. This short course aims to introduce students to the principles of satellite-based remote sensing of clouds and precipitation, along with the major satellite data products associated with these phenomena. Students will also get an opportunity to explore recent advancements in research that employ a combination of various satellite observations to investigate cloud and precipitation processes.
This is a hands-on class that goes beyond lectures. Students will collaborate in teams to work on final projects, which will be presented to the class at the end of the course. Additionally, each team will be required to write a concise report summarizing their findings.

This is meant to be a hybrid class, consisting of both online and in-person sessions:
‧ (Mid-November) Two weeks of online classes. Each week, there are two 1-hour sessions. Time will be 9pm-10pm Taiwan Standard Time (8am-9am Eastern Standard Time or NYC Time).
11/14(Tue)、1/16(Thu)、11/21(Tue)、11/23(Thu),9-10 PM
‧ (Mid-December) Two weeks of in-person classes from 12/18/23 through 12/29/23 (I will arrive in Taiwan in mid-December). Each week, there are three 2-hour sessions.
12/18(Mon)、12/20(Wed)、12/22(Fri)、12/25(Mon)、12/27(Wed)、12/29(Fri), 13:20-15:10

課程目標
Develop up-to-date knowledge of satellite-based remote sensing of clouds and precipitation
‧ Get familiarized with major satellite-based cloud and precipitation data products
‧ Learn current data analysis methods for studying cloud and precipitation related processes
課程要求
College-level math and physics, knowledge of atmospheric sciences, and basic programming skills. Knowledge of atmospheric radiation and remote sensing is desirable, but not required. Students will be asked to read papers and write up summaries in English, so certain level of English proficiency (especially in reading and writing) is needed. The targeted students are upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in Atmospheric Sciences or related fields.
